Tips On How To Drive Around B.C.?

Driving in British Columbia is very similar to driving in U.S. except when crossing a street with a traffic light. Most of the installed traffic lights do not have a signal arrow for turning left and you'll get honked at if you don't know how it works. Here are the rules for their traffic lights:
  1. Traffic lights without arrow:
    • In an intersection or a T-section, if you wish to turn left while the light is still solid green, you may do so when it is safe or oncoming traffic is clear. This is perfectly legal and you are expected to make the turn by the drivers behind you. In the states, you'll have to wait for the green arrow before you can make a turn but not in B.C.!
  2. Traffic lights with arrow (four lights):
    • In an intersection or a T-section, if you wish to turn left, you may do so after the green arrow is lit up. Oncoming cars are stopped so you are safe to make the turn. This is the same in U.S.. Some green arrows will blink but you don't have to worry about this. Once the green arrow is gone, the solid green (third light) will lit up. Oncoming cars will start moving but you may still make a left when it is safe to do it.
  3. Traffic lights with arrow (three lights):
    • Same as #2 except that the green arrow will turn into a solid arrow.

And please, if you are from California, keep your driving habits at home. Drivers in B.C. are very nice and would yield if you just turn your signal on. A simple wave to say thank you is always appreciated :)

And do not forget, Canada uses Kilometers (Km) and not MPH.
